Funerals

Celebrant-led funerals allow families and individuals the opportunity to say goodbye in the way that feels right for them.

I work closely with you to understand your loved one, your needs as family and friends, and the way in which you want to move through this final rite of passage.

Ceremonies can be joyful celebrations of life, with your loved ones ‘life story’ shared through a eulogy that I can write and deliver. Ceremonies can also be spaces to navigate loss and grief, as well as honouring their life and the impact their life has had.   I will take the time to get to know you and your loved one and hold your hand throughout this process.

Generally ceremonies will happen at a crematorium, where families, friends and community can gather to say a final farewell.  Celebrant – led funerals can also happen at gravesides or in more alternative settings for memorials or scattering of ashes (click here to learn more about alternative ceremonies).  Celebrant – led funerals cannot be held in religious spaces (where Ministers would lead a service), but they can contain elements of religion and spirituality.

If you would like to work with me then I will meet with you, generally at your home, for an initial conversation.  I will listen to you with patience, kindness and empathy and I understand that grief is complicated and shows up for people in different ways; there is no rulebook around how you should feel.  This conversation is your opportunity to tell me all about your loved one and what they meant to you.  We can also talk through biographical details like where they were born, family situation, working life, hobbies and achievements.  Together we will build up a picture of the departed and discuss how you would like for them to be spoken about on the day.  At this meeting we can also talk about music and readings and I will work alongside the Funeral Director or Funeral Arranger to make sure that all your wishes are included in the service.

I will then go away and write a script for the funeral, including a eulogy (i.e. your loved ones ‘life story’).  In advance of the ceremony you will have the opportunity to see this script and suggest any amends to ensure that we capture perfectly what your loved one meant to you and your family.
